Celestial Mechanics and Ancient Techniques
Overview
This project investigates the application of Ancient Astrological Techniques—specifically Essential Dignities (Domicile, Exaltation, Detriment, Fall)—to a modern dataset of celebrities.
We explicitly compare the two major zodiacal systems:
- Tropical Zodiac: Based on the seasons (Vernal Equinox). Used in Western Astrology.
- Sidereal Zodiac (Lahiri): Based on the fixed stars. Used in Vedic (Jyotish) Astrology.
Hypothesis
Does "Planetary Strength" (Dignity) correlate with professional success? And does one coordinate system (Tropical vs. Sidereal) align better with observed "eminence" or specific career paths?
Methodology
- Dataset: 52 Celebrities (31 Performers, 21 Scientists). Note: Subset of Project 13 dataset.
- Calculation:
- Positions calculated for Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn.
- Essential Dignity Scoring:
- Domicile: +5
- Exaltation: +4
- Detriment: -5
- Fall: -4
- Peregrine: 0
- Metric: We sum the scores for all 7 planets to get a "Total Chart Dignity Score".
Key Findings (Summary)
Detailed results are in RESULTS.md.
1. The "Scientist Shift"
- Tropical: Scientists have very low dignity scores (Mean: -3.15).
- Sidereal: Scientists have significantly higher dignity scores (Mean: 0.80).
- Significance: This shift is statistically significant ($p=0.04$). It suggests that Vedic/Sidereal mapping better captures the "chart strength" of Scientists in this dataset.
2. High-Profile Shifts
The coordinate shift completely rewrites the "Strength" of certain charts:
- Taylor Swift: Tropical powerhouse (+19) → Sidereal decline (-5).
- George Carlin: Tropical weakness (-13) → Sidereal powerhouse (+13).
- Richard Feynman: Tropical weakness (-15) → Sidereal strength (+7).
Discussion
This project highlights the dramatic difference essential dignities can make depending on the chosen reference frame. The widely held view that "Dignity = Success" offers conflicting results:
- In Tropical, highly successful Scientists often have "debilitated" charts.
- In Sidereal, those same Scientists appear "stronger". This implies that Ancient Western techniques might work differently (or better?) when applied to the Sidereal zodiac, or that "Debilitation" in Tropical astrology is not a barrier to scientific genius.
