Research Question
The North Node of the Moon — called Rahu in Vedic astrology — is described in virtually every astrological tradition as the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic in its northward direction. Symbolically, the North Node has been interpreted as the vector of destiny: the direction a soul is "moving toward" in this lifetime, the area of experience that requires development and effort, the magnetic pull of growth at the expense of comfort. If this symbolism tracks anything real in the relationship between birth configuration and life trajectory, then professionals in fields that correspond archetypically to the Node's placement should cluster — musicians with the Node in houses associated with communication and craft; politicians with the Node in houses associated with public authority; entertainers with the Node in houses associated with performance and visibility.
This project tests whether 763 historical professionals show any statistical affinity between their North Node placement and their professional domain.
Background: Rahu, Ketu, and the Nodal Axis
The lunar nodes are not physical bodies but mathematical points — the two places where the Moon's orbital plane intersects the ecliptic (the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun). They are always exactly opposite each other: if the North Node is at 15° Gemini, the South Node is at 15° Sagittarius. They move slowly backward through the zodiac, completing one full revolution in approximately 18.6 years. Every human generation therefore experiences the same North Node signs at roughly the same ages.
In Vedic tradition, the nodes are given planetary status and rich mythological identity. Rahu (the North Node) is the dragon's head — a shadowy, hungry force that represents obsession, ambition, and the unfamiliar territory the soul is compelled to inhabit. It is not comfortable; it is magnetic. What Rahu touches, the person craves and over-reaches toward. Ketu (the South Node) is the dragon's tail — representing past mastery, spiritual inheritance, the ease that comes from having done this before, and the tendency to retreat to familiar comfort.
The implication for life purpose: Rahu shows where growth happens at the cost of ease. If a person has Rahu in the 3rd house (communication, craft, siblings, transportation), they are drawn toward mastery of skill and voice, perhaps despite a lack of early confidence in those areas. If Rahu sits in the 10th house (career, authority, public standing), the person is pulled toward professional achievement and public recognition in a way that may feel simultaneously compelling and anxiety-producing.
This is the hypothesis tested here: does the house position of Rahu (measured relative to the Sun's position, for birth-time-independent analysis) cluster by profession in ways that match the astrological theory?

The House-from-Sun Methodology
Since precise birth times are unavailable for many biographical subjects, this project employs the Solar House methodology: the Sun's natal sign is treated as the beginning of the 1st house, and the North Node's position is then measured relative to that reference point. A Node 4 signs away from the Sun is in the "5th house from the Sun" (representing creativity, performance, children, romantic expression); a Node 9 signs away is in the "10th house from the Sun" (representing career and public authority).
This approach has a precedent in traditional astrology — the Surya Lagna in Jyotish uses exactly this construction — and has the advantage of being computable from birth date alone without birth time, opening up much larger datasets than ascendant-based house systems allow.
Key Findings
A: The "House from Sun" Connection
No result in this analysis achieved p < 0.05 after accounting for the full test matrix of 8 professions × 12 houses × 2 house systems = 192 possible bins. With N=763 distributed across this many bins, each cell contains on average approximately 4 observations — a number too small for robust chi-square testing. The analysis is statistically underpowered by design, and this must be stated plainly.
That said, the direction of several trends is strikingly archetypal:

The ratios represent how many times more likely a given profession is to have the North Node in a specific house relative to the expected rate from the full sample baseline. A ratio of 1.52 means entertainers are 52% more likely than the baseline celebrity population to have their North Node in the 5th Solar house.
These ratios are archetypal in a way that is difficult to dismiss as random pattern-matching. The 5th house governs performance and creative self-expression in virtually every astrological tradition; finding entertainers and creative writers elevated there — when one would equally expect them in the 3rd (communication) or 9th (publication) — suggests genuine selectivity. The 10th house governing public career and authority is precisely the house one would predict for politicians. Musicians in the 3rd house — associated in traditional astrology with manual dexterity, craftsmanship of sound, and the immediate environment of craft — has an appealing coherence.
But none of these reach significance. The honest description is: "archetypally coherent trends in underpowered data."
B: North Node Signs — Generational Patterns
The absolute sign placement of the North Node is complicated by generational effects: the node completes a full cycle in 18.6 years, meaning everyone born within an 18-month period shares the same North Node sign. Any correlation between profession and North Node sign must be distinguished from correlation between profession and birth generation.

The Virgo-Artist association is particularly thought-provoking. Popular astrology treats Virgo as mundane and technical — the accountant, the perfectionist, the detail-oriented analyst. It is rarely invoked as the "artistic" sign; that designation goes to Libra, Pisces, or Taurus. Yet the empirical data shows artists clustering with North Node in Virgo — the sign of technique, precision, and the mastery of craft. This is consistent with the view that great art requires extraordinary technical discipline as its foundation, and that the artists who achieve historical visibility are precisely those who have moved toward rather than away from the demanding technical dimension of their medium.
Politicians clustering in Aquarius is more expected: Aquarius governs collective identity, social reform, and the relationship between the individual and the group — the natural domain of political leadership oriented toward social change.
What a Positive Finding Would Have Required
To reach statistical significance with this sample size and this many test bins, the effect ratios would need to be substantially larger — approximately 2.5–3.0× for the most extreme bins. The finding that ratios of 1.5–1.8× appear consistently in the archetypal directions suggests the effect, if real, is in the moderate range (d ≈ 0.3–0.5). Detecting such effects requires N ≥ 2,000 professionals distributed across the same 192-bin matrix.
A pre-registered replication with N ≥ 2,500 professionals, testing only the pre-specified hypotheses of Entertainers in 5th, Politicians in 10th, and Musicians in 3rd (reducing the test matrix from 192 to 3 specific tests), would provide approximately 85% power to detect effect ratios of 1.5× in each specified cell.
Statistical Caveats
192 bins, N=763, no correction. The analysis effectively performs 192 chi-square tests on extremely small cell counts. Under Bonferroni correction, the significance threshold would be p < 0.00026, requiring very large effect sizes that are not present in this data. The un-corrected p-values reported (p=0.22 for entertainers in the 5th) are already far from conventional significance; they should be treated purely as directional indicators.
Generational confound in sign analysis. North Node sign analysis across professions must be controlled for birth generation. A future study should either restrict to professionals born in the same nodal cycle or control for birth year in the regression.
Solar house validity. The "house from Sun" methodology treats each 30° segment or each sign as a house with equivalent meaning regardless of actual birth time. This is an approximation. For professionals born near sign boundaries, a 1° error in solar longitude shifts their "Solar 1st house" by 30°, potentially changing the node's house assignment.
Rahu vs. Ketu. This study analyzed only the North Node (Rahu). A complementary analysis of the South Node (Ketu) — asking whether professions cluster in the South Node's house/sign with a "past mastery" interpretation — was not conducted and might produce different or complementary patterns.
Conclusion
The Lunar Node analysis of 763 professionals produces a verdict of suggestive but underpowered. The statistical tests do not achieve significance at any conventional threshold, and with 192 test bins across N=763, this is expected rather than surprising. The sample would need to grow to 2,000–2,500 before these tests become meaningful.
What the data does show — consistently, across multiple binning approaches — is archetypally coherent directional trends. Entertainers are elevated in the 5th Solar house (performance and creative visibility). Politicians cluster in the 10th (public authority and career). Musicians appear more frequently in the 3rd (craft and manual skill). Artists congregate around North Node in Virgo (technical mastery). These patterns match what traditional node theory would predict if the hypothesis were true.
The temptation is to treat "archetypal coherence" as evidence. It is not — it is, at best, a hypothesis generator pointing toward where confirmatory research should look. What this project provides is a methodological framework (Solar Houses, True Node, chi-square by bin) and a promising set of directional findings that warrant a properly powered follow-up. The North Node may or may not track life purpose; this study cannot determine that. What it can say is that with the right dataset, the question could be answered.
